02/15/2010 One must be aware of the danger of pressure cracks that occur as the ice thickens, expands and plates move together pushing upwards. A recents snowmobile fatality in North Bay has been attributed to the snowmobiler hitting one of these during bad light conditions.

Allan Eustis sends along this satellite image from Dec. 30 - west side of lake is ice free (dark blue/black). Other places probably have lots of snow but little ice thickness. Lake Nipissing to the south has good ice - compare the white colour of two lakes to see that Lake Temagami ice is still quite thin.
